The Sanskrit word for philosophy is 'Darshana' which literally means 'Sight'. It means the search after the ultimate truth of life in the world. Consciously, or more usually unconsciously, everyone is trying to discover the reality behind the experiences of their daily lives. Intellectually this search expresses itself as the hunger for knowledge. It is not only feminine curiosity which remains unsated : the scientist unceasingly probing the ' How' by experiments and the child persistently asking 'Why' are manifesting a characteristic which is deeply engrained in every human personality. Emotionally, the same urge can be recognised in the universal desire to be happy and to avoid sorrow and suffering. |
